About Me
My name is Keren and I have been involved in various livestock industries over the years. I have enjoyed working with beef cattle, sheep, alpacas, deer, wildlife, however goats have always been the ones to capture my heart. My background is in conventional intensive livestock farming; I was born on a piggery, in the traditional ‘wheat and sheep belt’ of New South Wales, and throughout my schooling became very interested and involved in managing beef cattle feedlots. I was introduced to goats at 16 and continued on to a university degree in livestock production.
While I believe that conventional farming methods have their place and are necessary to provide nutrition for our vast population, I am a big believer in sustainable and alternative methods of food production. I am especially supportive of small farmers and homesteading. My viewpoint is that we should all be making an effort to produce some food at home, and if we cant, to source our food from local growers.
I have been on my own self sufficiency journey, however at this stage in my life I have struggled to dedicate enough time to it. Thus I have had to postpone my self sufficiency goals and have sold my meat rabbits, chickens, ducks, quail and vegetable garden. I do however remain dedicate to the self sufficiency idealogy and believe my role in that is to produce healthy, loved and high quality dairy goats suitable for sale to people who would like them as home milkers.
Having always been an animal lover, my family now consists of one dog, two cats, 12 dairy goats, 2 fancy chickens, 1 pet sheep and one extremely patient fiancé. The dog and cats serve no purpose other than keeping my feet toasty in bed and keeping me busy feeding, cleaning, playing etc. The goats however, keep our family and others well supplied in milk and home made dairy products.
I am an avid supporter of the goat as a versatile homesteading animal as well as a loving pet. As I travel along my journey towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, I hope to inspire and teach others about these gentle, intelligent and useful creatures.
